Responding to NCLB

Most educators have done nothing but complain; others have begun to change their previous underachieving ways.

This article is encouraging, but the fact that teachers are asking themselves "did students understand" worries me.

"Understanding" is the wrong standard for successful teaching.

The standard has to be "did the students master the material," with mastery encompassing both comprehension and commitment to long term memory.
